CHEVY - CHEVROLET  WATER PUMP - Part Number AF-424
Note: rebuilt pumps are sold on an exchange only basis. If no rebuildable core is exchanged add $65.00 core charge. This part is remanufactured and we must have your rebuildable part (core) as an exchange. You will be charged a core charge that will be refunded upon our reciept of your rebuildable core. Installation Instructions: Water pumps used in Chevrolet cars & trucks from 1929-1934 were a bushing-type pump. There are no bearings in this pump. Because of this fact, it is important that lubrication and belt tension are done properly. The water pumps we sell are carefully rebuilt with all new parts except the housing and pulley. Before installing any rebuilt pump, be sure to fill the grease cup with grease and turn down until resistance is met. Turn pulley by hand and turn grease cup in again until resistance is met. Repeat until the pump has the initial greasing. Refill grease cup as needed. Also, put several drops of oil in the oil hole at the front bushing. The brass water pump packing nut should not be adjusted unless leaking occurs at the shaft. Tighten this nut only enough to stop the leaking. CAUTION: Over tightening of the packing nut can cause the shaft to seize. Check the water pump baffle place in the block behind the water pump impeller. If this plate is missing or damaged, you must replace it. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE FAN BELT! If you over tighten the fan belt you will cause premature failure of the bushings in the water pump. The tension adjustment should be just tight enough to keep the belt from slipping. Lubricate this pump often. Each time you are preparing to take the vehicle for a run of more than a few miles, you should oil the front bushing (under the pulley) and turn down the grease cup. We do not recommend use of anti-freeze in 1929-1932 models. These vehicles did not come with thermostats and anti-freeze will foam when used in these systems. Instead, we recommend water pump lubricant be used to prevent corrosion. In wintertime, it will be necessary to either drain your radiator or add anti freeze to protect against freezing. If you add anti freeze for cold weather, be sure to remove it during the driving season. Filter & save it in a clean container for use in the next cold weather season. Items you may want for the water pump installation & maintenance: VT-27 Water Pump Grease, RW-182 Water Pump Baffle Plate, AF-279 Water Pump Wrench 1”, H-15 Water Pump Lubricant, RW-220 or RW-220T Water Pump Packing .
