With Crane's multi-index cam gears you have the versatility of three cam timing settings with one camshaft. One position gives a 4 degree advance to usual cam timing and another position is 4 degrees retarded of the original timing. Overall, an 8 degree timing range is available with these Crane camshafts for H-D Big Twins. What does a change of cam timing do? An advance in cam timing will lower the power band of the engine, while retarding the cam will raise the power band. Of course, the amount of change will vary depending on the other engine components. Generally, we're talking about two or three hundred rpm power band change each way. How can it help tune the engine? Different applications of an engine may require a change in rpm ranges. More cam advance will add torque for low end performance for touring or heavy machines. For race applications, raising or lowering the power band may be needed for getting better low end torque or high end speed. It's up to you (or your tuner). Is it difficult to change the timing on a Crane Cam? No! With the Crane multi-index gear, a small press and a little care is all that's needed. Crane's clear markings and easy instructions make it an easy task for any mechanic. Is the Crane Cam more expensive than other cams? Crane cams are very competitive in price plus the multi-index gear gives the purchaser the advantage of having three cams for the price of one. An additional benefit is Crane's quality, backed by a one year, hassle-free warranty. Crane's Fireball Cams--The Fireball Series is a cam line that Crane introduced to fill the need for a low price camshaft. The Fireball 300 grind comes in three part numbers to fit all H-D Big Twins 1948-1984. The Fireball 300-2 grind is for all Evolution Big Twins. They are bolt-in cams which will deliver streetable performance even with a box stock engine. The Fireball cams do not have the Crane multi-index feature of the other Crane cams, but are of the same material and quality. One year limited warranty.
