RADIAL OX8R EIGHT CHANNEL 3-WAY SPLI - Part Number 000122
RADIAL OX8r EIGHT CHANNEL 3-WAY SPLITTER with RADIAL TRANSFORMERS Compact 8-channel multi-purpose splitter Rear panel D-sub and Euro (Phoenix) screw terminals Ideal for live recording and signal distribution Choice of custom Radial or Jensen transformers Choice of mic splitter (OX8) or line splitter (LX8) designs The Radial OX8 is a high-performance 8-channel 3-way mic splitter that is equipped with an input and three outputs: a direct feed for 48V phantom return, an auxiliary feed with ground lift switch and a transformer isolated output. Although primarily designed for mic signals, the OX8 is equipped with a -36dB pad for line level sources, making the OX8 highly adaptable for all types of signal splitting. The OX8 is particularly well suited to accommodate live recording by delivering a transformer isolated audio signal path for the recording engineer while providing a direct feed to the front of house and monitor consoles. For maximum flexibility, several connector options are available. Inputs may be accessed via the front panel, using standard XLRs, or the rear panel, with a choice of either 25 pin D-subs (wired to the Tascam standard) or Euro screw-down terminal connectors. Outputs include D-subs and Euro connectors, which are also located on the rear panel. These make it easy to connect to popular multi-track recording systems while providing easy termination for permanent installations. Because it is 100% passive, the OX8 does not require any power to make it work. Maximum durability is ensured with heavy duty 14 gauge steel construction throughout. The OX8 can be ordered with our own custom wound Radial transformers or may be ordered with Jensen Transformers. Also available is the LX8, a +4dB balanced line level version of the OX8. The LX8 comes with Jensen audio transformers only. The Radial OX8 and LX8 great sounding splitters that that are easy to use, compact and convenient. OX8 - Real-world scenarios The following are three common OX8 on-stage scenarios. To keep things simple, we are showing only 8 channels here, however the same layout would be used for any number of channels by simply adding more OX8 splitters. Inputs can be routed to the front mounted balanced XLR-F connectors, or the rear facing D-sub or Euroblock (Phoenix) connectors or any combination thereof. Output connections can be routed through either the D-sub or Euroblock connectors or a combination of these. The OX8 splitter is designed with the versatility you need to make your life easier for live stage, broadcast or fixed studio applications. OX8 - 'Basic PA system setup' This is a typical application for a mic splitter. The microphone feeds the Radial OX8 and the signal is split between the room PA system or front of house (FOH) and the on-stage monitors. The transformer isolated output helps eliminate ground loops which are generally caused by stray currents traveling between the various pieces of equipment. In this setup the mics are connected to the front panel input. A standard 8-channel D-Sub to XLR patch cable connects from the OX8 main out to the FOH mixing console which enables a return feed for the 48V phantom to power the mics and direct boxes. Another D-Sub to XLR cable connects from the OX8 isolated output to the monitor desk. OX8 - 'Combination live & recording setup' In this scenario, the OX8 is used to feed the main PA system, on stage monitors and a separate recording system. This same setup could be used to send a feed to a broadcast truck or for a live pod-cast to the internet. In this setup the mics are connected to the front panel input. A standard 8-channel D-Sub to XLR patch cable connects from the OX8 main out to the FOH mixing console which again, enables a return feed for the 48V phantom to power the mics and direct boxes. For on-stage monitoring, a second D-Sub to XLR cable connects from the OX8 auxiliary output to the monitor desk. The isolated output is reserved for the record or broadcast feed to ensure the quietest signal reaches the medium. A third D-Sub to XLR cable is used. OX8 - 'In-Ear monitoring system' Today, many bands use their own in-ear monitoring systems to ensure that they enjoy a consistent sound as they travel from venue to venue. This setup requires that they interface their in-ear system with the PA while providing their in-ear monitor engineer with total control over the sound going into the ear buds. The radial OX8 helps make this possible by providing a transparent signal directly from the stage microphones. In this setup the mics are connected to the front panel input. A D-Sub to XLR patch cable connects from the OX8 main out to the venue snake system. This often will include a second splitter that will feed the main PA system, the on-stage monitors and side fills. In this case, the isolated output is reserved for the in-ear monitor system to ensure the quietest signal reaches the medium. Connection is made using a standard 8-channel D-Sub to XLR cable. The OX8 In Detail OX8 Features and Functions The Radial OX8 is a passive 8-channel splitter that enables mic signals to be distributed to various destinations without introducing noise or artifact. To simplify connectivity it is equipped with various connectors making it adaptable for live sound, recording and broadcast. The single space 19" rackmount design is compact yet easily expandable by applying a modular approach. This makes the Radial OX8 a great choice from small clubs, churches and concert venues alike. The Radial OX8 is a full-function mic splitter that has been designed to accommodate remote recording, broadcast and live sound installations. It may be used alone or combined with other OX8 splitters for larger systems. The OX8 front panel provides quick access to the XLR connectors for on-the-fly hookup. High-performance glass filled nylon XLRs with oversized nickel-silver contact pins assure long life and excellent connectivity. Next to each input connector is a ground lift switch that lifts pin-1 on the auxiliary output to reduce noise caused by ground loops. A -36dB pad provides an effective means to interface line level devices by providing a preventive measure against transformer overload. As with all Radial products, the OX8 is designed to withstand the abuse of professional touring. A 12 gauge front panel and welded 14 gauge steel frame provide a rigid platform to ensure the internal electronics are protected. One of the key attributes built-in to the Radial OX8 is a noise eliminating RF filter on each channel. Noise is further reduced by shortening the input distance in front of the transformer, effectively eliminating the antenna. A dual sided military spec printed surface board increases solder flow to both sides to improve circuit connectivity and part bonding. This is particularly beneficial for large parts such as the transformers. The Radial OX8 comes standard with Radial transformers or may be special ordered with Jensens. Both transformer options feature precision winding and mu-metal outer shield to keep RF and outside electro-magnetic fields from polluting the all-important magnetic bridge. Keep in mind that the audio signal path is bridged passively via the transformer and this is the engine that does the work. The Radial transformer provides a very solid performance from 20hz to 18.5kHz and is ideal for the most demanding live applications and well suited for recording. The Jensen transformer extends from 10Hz to 40kHz making it the ultimate choice for ultra-high resolution applications. During our market research, it was clear that engineers wanted the OX8 to have smallest possible footprint while providing the maximum feature set. To accomplish this task, 25 pin D-Sub connectors were selected as the primary interface. D-Subs have been employed for over a decade by companies such as Tascam and Digidesign. This makes the cables readily accessible and easily replaceable should a failure be encountered in the field. The OX8 employs the Tascam standard 8-channel configuration and pin out. To accommodate permanent installations, a series of euro-block (Phoenix -style) connectors have also been added. This makes the OX8 simple to integrate into a sound system such as a church or performance venue while providing easy strip & insert connectivity for field servicing. (note wire end terminal blocks are sold separately) For concert touring, a custom break-out panel would normally be added that would feature XLR or multipin connectors mounted on a steel plate. This would then be wired to the OX8 rear panel and provide a protective buffer in between the more fragile D-subs and the real world.
